Type of Religion- The main religion that covers most of the country is Roman Catholicism. About 72% of the population is Catholic. 16% call themselves Evangelical, a term that includes most non-Catholic churches, Orthodox faiths, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Seventh-Day Adventists, and Jehovah's Witnesses. The Jewish community only has about 30,00 members which is less than 1% of the population in Chile. Traditionally the Roman Catholic Church has had a privileged place in the country of Chile. In March of 2000 there was a law passed that gave non-Catholics certain rights and permissions.
Major Beliefs and Behaviors- Their beliefs are also worship of the creator Ngenechen adn teh destroyer Wakufu. A lot of Chileans believe that the spirits of people who have died a tragic death that their spirits will linger in the area where they died that death. The living can seek them in their prayers. Little shrines with flowers and candles (Animitas) are usually set up where they died. Animitas sometimes can become places of prayer. There are a lot of myths and legends in Chile. One is about a lost city that is supposed to have an extreme amount of wealth in it, the streets are supposedly paved with silver and gold. A mist always covers the city from sight and that all who go there will lose the memory they have of going there. It will only be seen once, at the end of the world and of course there are the nonbelievers as well.
